Financing for breeders

A serious buyer who cannot cover $3,500 today is not a buyer you should lose, and not one you should take a payment plan from directly.

In short

Financing lets a committed buyer complete today rather than waiting or going elsewhere, and it takes you out of the business of chasing instalments yourself. Programs cover $200 to $12,750, including transport, supplies and veterinary care. This is also the most state-restricted category we work in, and availability is confirmed at application rather than promised.

Be careful here

What a responsible breeder should insist on

This category carries reputational risk that the others do not, and it is worth being deliberate.

State restrictions are real

Several states limit or prohibit lease-purchase agreements covering live animals. The application checks the buyer’s state at the time they apply rather than relying on a published list that goes stale.

Make sure the buyer understands the structure

If an agreement is a lease, the buyer does not own the animal until it completes. Buyers who did not understand that is what drove the legislation. Say it plainly at the point of sale.

Financing does not replace screening

A buyer who can pay is not automatically a buyer who should have the animal. Your screening process should be unchanged by the availability of terms.

Questions

Merchant questions

Is pet financing available in every state?

No. Several states restrict or prohibit lease-purchase agreements covering live animals, and the rules change. Availability is confirmed during the buyer’s application.

Can transport and veterinary care be included?

Yes. Transport, initial veterinary care, supplies and often training can be financed alongside the animal.

Do I have to chase payments?

No. The lender or lessor funds the transaction and collects the payments. You are paid on invoice.

Does the buyer own the animal immediately?

On an installment loan, yes. On a lease-purchase agreement, ownership transfers on completion or buyout — which should be explained clearly at the point of sale.
